Instructions
1. Activate the Yeast
In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy. This step ensures your yeast is active.
2. Make the Dough
Add the melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually stir in the flour until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
3. Knead & Rise
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
4. Shape the Muffins
Punch down the dough and roll it out to about ½-inch thickness. Cut into rounds using a biscuit cutter or glass. Place on a lightly floured surface, cover, and let rest for 20–30 minutes.
5. Cook on the Stovetop
Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over low heat. Cook the muffins for about 5–7 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Keep the heat low so they cook evenly without burning.
6. Cool & Enjoy
Let cool slightly before slicing with a fork to create those signature nooks and crannies. Toast and enjoy!
Homemade English muffins are easier than you think, and once you try them, you’ll never want store-bought again. Happy baking! ☕🍞
