Pizza-Flavored Sourdough Bread (With or Without a Starter)
This loaf combines everything you love about sourdough with classic pizza flavors — marinara, Parmesan, mozzarella, and jalapeños. You can make it three ways:
1. no starter,
2. true long-ferment sourdough, or
3. a quick 2-hour hybrid loaf using starter or discard plus yeast.
Pizza-Flavored Base Ingredients
• 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
• 1 ½ tsp salt
• 1 tsp sugar or honey
• 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
• ½ cup warm water (110°F)
• ½ cup marinara sauce (room temperature)
• 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
• ½ cup shredded mozzarella
• ¼ cup grated Parmesan
• 1–2 jalapeños, finely diced (seeds removed if desired)

Pizza-Flavored No-Starter Instructions
1. Activate the yeast
In a large bowl, mix ½ cup warm water, 1 tsp sugar, and 2 ¼ tsp yeast. Let foam for 5–10 minutes.
2. Mix the dough
Stir in ½ cup marinara sauce, 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, and 1 ½ tsp salt. Gradually add 3 ½ cups flour until a dough forms.
3. Add fillings
Gently knead in mozzarella, Parmesan, and jalapeños.
4. Knead
Knead 8–10 minutes until smooth. Add flour 1 tbsp at a time if sticky.
5. Rise
Cover and let rise 1–1½ hours, until doubled.
6. Shape + second rise
Shape into a round loaf. Rest 30–45 minutes.
7. Bake (covered method)
Bake at 450°F:
• Covered 20 minutes
• Uncovered 10–15 minutes Cool 30 minutes before slicing.
Option 2: True Sourdough Pizza Loaf (Starter Only)
Ingredients (changes)
• Omit yeast, sugar, and vinegar
• Add 1 cup active sourdough starter
• Use ¼ cup water + ½ cup marinara
Instructions
1. Mix starter, water, marinara, flour, and salt.
2. Rest 30 minutes.
3. Knead lightly; add cheese and jalapeños.
4. Bulk ferment 4–6 hours, folding every 30 minutes for first 2 hours.
5. Shape and proof 2–4 hours (or overnight in fridge).
6. Bake using covered method above.
Option 3: 2-Hour Hybrid Sourdough (Starter or Discard + Yeast)
This gives real sourdough flavor fast.
Ingredients (changes)
• ½ cup sourdough starter or discard
• 1 tsp yeast (instead of full packet)
• Reduce flour to 3 ¼ cups
• Reduce water to ¼ cup + ½ cup marinara
Instructions
1. Activate yeast in warm water.
2. Mix in starter, marinara, salt, and flour.
3. Knead; add cheese and jalapeños.
4. Rise 60–75 minutes.
5. Shape, rest 20 minutes.
6. Bake using covered method.
